Birth and Childhood

Bahá’u’lláh

Bahá’u’lláh, a title that means “the Glory of God” in Arabic, was born on 12 November 1817 in Tehran, Iran. His given name was Mirza Husayn Ali, and He was the son of a wealthy government minister, Mirza Buzurg-i-Nuri.

As Bahá’u’lláh came from a noble family, when he was a young man, he was offered a high position in the court of the King, but He refused it. Instead of pursuing a life of power and leisure, Bahá’u’lláh chose to devote His energies to a range of philanthropies including helping the oppressed, the sick and the poor, and to champion the cause of justice, which had, by the early 1840s, earned Him renown as “father of the poor.”

His son, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, said this concerning His childhood: “… Bahá’u’lláh, belonged to the nobility of Persia. From earliest childhood He was distinguished among His relatives and friends.… In wisdom, intelligence and as a source of new knowledge, He was advanced beyond His age and superior to His surroundings. All who knew Him were astonished at His precocity. It was usual for them to say, ‘Such a child will not live,’ for it is commonly believed that precocious children do not reach maturity.”

Taj of Baha'u'llah
Passing of Baha’u’llah

The Ancient Beauty hath consented to be bound with chains that mankind may be released from its bondage, and hath accepted to be made a prisoner within this most mighty Stronghold that the whole world may attain unto true liberty. He hath drained to its dregs the cup of sorrow, that all the peoples of the earth may attain unto abiding joy, and be filled with gladness. This is of the mercy of your Lord, the Compassionate, the Most Merciful. We have accepted to be abased, O believers in the Unity of God, that ye may be exalted, and have suffered manifold afflictions, that ye might prosper and flourish. He Who hath come to build anew the whole world, behold, how they that have joined partners with God have forced Him to dwell within the most desolate of cities!

Baha’u’llah passed away in 1892. His Shrine, which is considered by the Baha’is to be the Holiest Spot on earth, is located near the city of Akka, Israel.

So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.
